As I’ve aged, the vertical ridges on my nails have become more noticeable. I particularly observed them in recent pictures featuring my thumb prominently holding a Nilla wafer in my pumpkin cheesecake dip recipe. This prompted me to delve into research to understand whether these ridges signify anything about my health and if there are ways to address them.
What Vertical Ridges Indicate About Your Health
After thorough investigation, I discovered that while there is a rare chance that these ridges may suggest an underlying medical condition or nail trauma, for most individuals, it is a normal part of aging. The prominence of these ridges tends to increase with age, particularly for those with dry skin or skin conditions like eczema.
At 36, I’ve only recently found these ridges bothersome, but I’m relieved to learn that they are likely harmless. It seems to be a natural part of the aging process.
Why Do These Ridges Form?
Essentially, these ridges are akin to wrinkles for nails. As we age, the effectiveness of the nail matrix diminishes in certain areas, causing nails to grow unevenly and resulting in the appearance of lines or ridges from the cuticle to the tip.
However, certain deficiencies, such as low levels of protein, zinc, calcium, or vitamin A, can exacerbate or cause these ridges. If deep ridges or other health concerns are present, a blood test may be advisable to check for potential deficiencies.
Reducing the Visibility of Vertical Ridges on Your Nails
To minimize the appearance of these lines, it’s essential to moisturize hands and fingers regularly with a thick cream, oil, or petroleum jelly, giving special attention to the cuticles. Essentially, treating nails as one would treat wrinkles is beneficial.
Additionally, I recently discovered that buffing and polishing nails with an affordable $8 tool can make them smooth and shiny, almost resembling clear nail polish. I found a shape and shine tool on Amazon, and it feels like a rejuvenation for my hands. However, caution is advised not to overdo the buffing and sanding, especially for those with thin nails.
Painting nails is an effective way to disguise ridges, especially when using a ridge-filling base coat. This not only conceals the ridges but also helps establish a better bond with the nail polish, extending its longevity.
