If you have been diagnosed with cervical cancer, then the treatment options available to you will depend on the type of cancer you have. Your doctor may recommend surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or immunotherapy, which uses your immune system to fight against your tumors. Sometimes your doctor will suggest combining treatments to get rid of your cancer. Unfortunately, treatment options for this type of cancer can be complex and expensive. You may also face a lot of side effects from these treatments.
If you’re dealing with cervical cancer cases that have spread, then your doctor might also order a pelvic examination to make sure that the cancer has not spread to other areas of your body, including the vagina, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and outside the uterus. A speculum inserted into your vagina will help your doctor to determine whether or not cancer has spread. During your pelvic exam, your doctor will check for abnormalities in the tissue of your pelvis, including: excessive scarring, a change in shape or size of the pelvis, pain, unusual vaginal discharge, or bleeding. Abnormal vaginal discharge or blood may indicate that the cancer has spread to an additional area.
